Eight Centuries Beneath the Earth

Every mine is dug completely by hand — without heavy machinery — so the land and the gemstones within it remain as nature intended.

Traditional hand-dug mine — Dela, Ratnapura

At Colors of Ceylon LLC, our gemstones begin their journey deep beneath the earth in the gem-rich lands of Ratnapura. Our family-owned land in Dela, Ratnapura, has been passed down through generations for over 800 years, carrying with it a deep connection to Sri Lanka's rich gemstone heritage.

Our mining is carried out through traditional small-scale methods that have been practiced for centuries. Working closely with experienced local miners, each layer of earth is carefully excavated, washed, and searched by hand in the hope of uncovering nature's hidden treasures.

This slower and more delicate process reflects our commitment to ethical sourcing, sustainability, and respect for the land that has provided gemstones to our family for generations. From rough discovery to precision cutting and fine jewelry creation, we remain involved in every stage of the journey — ensuring that every gemstone carries not only exceptional beauty, but also a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and authenticity.

We also offer exclusive small-group mining experiences for those looking to discover the world of Ceylon gemstones firsthand. Guests are invited to stay at our family home in Ratnapura and experience authentic Sri Lankan gem mining up close — from visiting our traditional hand-dug mines to learning about gemstone washing, sorting, and cutting directly from the source. As part of the experience, guests are welcomed with traditional Sri Lankan hospitality and home-cooked Sri Lankan meals, offering a true taste of the culture and heritage that surrounds the world of Ceylon gemstones.
